U.S. Government Sponsors Four-Day Workshop and Festival For Athletes with Disabilities

Deputy Chief of Mission Virginia M. Blaser shows off her juggling skills with a group of athletes with disabilities at the inauguration of the sports for disability workshop organized by the University of Kentucky and the Tanzanian Paralympic Committee.

The University of Kentucky and the Tanzanian Paralympic Committee launched at the National Stadium a four-day workshop and festival for Tanzanian and Kenyan athletes with disabilities.  Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the festival features a team of American, British, and Canadian coaches, who are conducting athletic trainings in track and field, powerlifting, volleyball, and football.  The festival is the first phase of an exchange program through which seventeen Tanzanian and Kenyan coaches and administrators will travel to the United States to shadow counterparts in Kentucky and Indiana.

The U.S. Government already has a strong relationship with the Tanzanian Paralympic Committee and a history of exchange programs like this one. Working together, we will realize a future in which all our citizens, regardless of whether or not they have disabilities, can participate in sports, and in which all of us can reap the benefits of that participation to our nations.
