NATIONAL PARA SPORTS EVENT OF 13th MARCH 2022
The Tanzania Paralympic Committee – TPC is a National umbrella organization that harbor 7 National Disability Sports Associations in Tanzania. TPC is registered under National Sports Council with registration number NSC:1913 and has a membership at International Paralympic Committee, IPC in – Bonn Germany and African Paralympic Committee – APC in Africa.
TPC has a mandate to Provide leadership, supervision, coordination and support for Paralympic Sports movements and growth in Tanzania. It promotes meaningful participation of male and female athletes with a disability in local and international sports and organizes community awareness programs through sports as a way to address negative perceptions and participation barriers.
TPC has organized the National Paralympic sports competitions on Sunday of 13th March 2022 at Uhuru Stadium, Dar es salaam that involved a series of sports competitions such as Wheelchair racing, Javelin throw, Discus throw, shot put, short, medium and long run (200, 400, 800 and 1,500 Meters), and powerlifting sports.
The competitions are meant to foster talents acquisition and development; create community awareness on disability sports, motivate young boys and girls with disabilities from the grassroots to take part in games and offer opportunities for networking which is one of the main objectives of TPC
The competition also increases the fitness of the players and are believed to offer a good preparation ground for Tanzania athletes with disabilities ahead of international sports tournaments such as: – the Commonwealth games of Birmingham, the United Kingdom from 28th July – 08 August 2022, African Paralympic games to be held in Ghana in 2023 and other international qualification games.
The competitions draw around 40 athletes from Dar es Salaam, Iringa, Mbeya and Ruvuma regions with expected attendance of more than 400 people.
