Support establishment of Amputee Football in Zanzibar
In 2021, Tanzania Paralympic Committee – TPC has entered an agreement with International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) to promote Amputee Football in Zanzibar. Through ICRC’s financial support, between 3rd to 8th September 2021 TPC has supported a series events in Zanzibar to fulfil the said objective. These include: –
- Facilitated mobilization and identification of players to form the Amputee Football team in Zanzibar and conducted community sensitization.
- Supported registration of Zanzibar Amputee Football Federation – ZAFF
- Purchased sports items (Balls and Jerseys) and equipment to 52 amputee footballers in Zanzibar
- Organized a training course on football rules to amputee footballers in Zanzibar
- Organized a handing over even that won great publicity from mass and social media coverage
In addition, TPC purchased soccer boots (50 pairs), Soccer Balls (10 pcs), Soccer Jerseys (52 pairs) for ZAFF. Handing over was done to 52 Amputee footballers in presence of delegates from ICRC, Tanzania Football Association (TAFF), National Sports Council (NSC),) and Zanzibar National Sports Council (ZNSC) who witnessed the handing over event. The event was graced by the Minister of Information and Sports of Zanzibar Ms. Tabia Maulid Mwita who was the guest of honour
The event was publicized by 3 TV stations – Zanzibar broadcasting corporation – ZBC, Zanzibar Cable Television, Star TV, Zan TV online; 6 Radio stations namely Zanzibar Cable FM, Hits FM, Plus FM, ABM Radio, Habari FM, Zanzibar 24; and 3 Printing media namely Habari Leo, Zanzibar Leo, and Champion
The National Para-athletic and Para-Power lifting competitions in March 2022
TPC has organized the National Paralympic sports competitions on Sunday of 13th March 2022 at Uhuru stadium, Dar es salaam that involved series of sports competitions such as Wheelchair racing, Javelin throw, Discus throw, shot put, short, medium and long run (200, 400, 800 and 1,500 Meters), and powerlifting sports
The competitions were meant to foster talents acquisition and development; create community awareness on disability sports, motivate young boys and girls with disabilities from grassroots to take part in games and offer opportunities for networking which is one of the main objectives of TPC
The competition also increased fitness of the players and are believed to offer good preparation ground for Tanzania athletes with disabilities ahead of international sports tournaments such as: – the Commonwealth games of Birmingham, United Kingdom from 28th July – 08 August 2022, African Paralympic games to be held in Ghana in 2023 and other international qualification games.
The competitions drew 83 athletes from Dar es salaam, Iringa, Morogoro, Arusha, Manyara, Ruvuma, Shinyanga, Mwanza, Simiyu, Mara regions and Zanzibar.
TPC owed much thanks and appreciations to Toyota Tanzania Limited, Gold Star Paints, and National Sports Council – NSC (BMT) who were the main sponsors of these competitions for their invaluable support to TPC and disability sports in Tanzania.
